I am ready now!

Back in May of this year I heard my wife, Catherine, say "Chad, I think that I am ready now." I was thinking, "ready for what. Did I miss something?"

Catherine and I process things differently. I consider a matter, look at as many facts as possible (okay maybe I over do it on the facts sometimes), make a decision, and then move on to the next item on the list. Once I have made up my mind I tend to not think about the matter any more (Note: Catherine has helped me to see the value in not being so stubborn about a decision). Catherine seems to be multitasking on all items at once, and even once a decision has been made it can still be changed. Neither method is wrong. They are just different.

I once heard an author say that men are like waffles and women are like spaghetti. Okay picture a waffle laying on a plate, and then picture a plate of spaghetti. Did you picture how the different areas of a waffle are divided into compartments and none of them overlap? What about that plate of spaghetti and how every noodle seems to overlap and wind together? Neither is wrong. Just different.

So, to what decision did the statement apply? This statement was an answer to something Catherine and I first began talking about eight years ago. That was right after we were first married. We had watched several of our friends make this decision and had watched my sister and her husband make this decision. We had also been able to watch the lives of these people be richly blessed as a result.

Catherine stated, "I am ready now." The interesting part was that we had not discussed this topic is several months. In fact it might have been over a year. So, I curiously replied, "Ready for what?". To which she answered, "Ready to Adopt".

It will probably be another year to year and a half before we can bring her home. But every day Emily becomes more and more a part of our family. So, am I ready? Yes, but the walls of my waffle compartments are starting to look a little like spaghetti.
